THIS IS A CHILDRENS BOOK

OBJECTIVE

TO TEACH THEM ABOUT CITIES

STATES

GOVERNMENT

SYSTEMS

AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS

THAT AFFECT A COMMUNITY

THIS IS ONE BOOK OF A SERIES (POSSIBLY A NEW TWIST ON THE DOT BOOK ASSIGNMENT)  FOR FUTURE STUDENTS.

I FEEL LIKE THIS WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA SINCE THE WAY WE SEEM TO HAVE LEARNED THINGS THIS YEAR HAS REALLY MADE ME FEEL LIKE A CHILD. THE ENTIRE SEMESTER HAS REALLY BEEN A DECONSTRUCTING, RE-LEARNING PROCESS. A NEW

UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE HAS WORKED IN THE PAST AND A NEW UNDERSTANDING OF ITS ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES HAS BEEN  THE THEME OF MY JOURNEY THROUGH THE FIRST SEMESTER OF SOPHOMORE YEAR IN GRAPHIC DESIGN.

dot_red0

So I've come up with some ideas for the dot comp book.
1wikepedia information-----dont like it

2dictionary-----dont like it

3job search adds+++++like it
help wanted

4multi-lingual translation------dont like it
5childrens dictionary++++like it
dictionary for kids along with explanations that are both linear and warpishly not linear but expose kids to ideas that are slightly more complex. The idea is 1-expose kids to linear associations from visual to verbal communication in more sophisticated and still remain logical__and 2-introduce sophisticated ideas to kids that may not grasp all the associations all at once.......this would make the book more meaningful for a longer period of time.__perhaps kids will grow more connotations for the words at earlier ages.
I think this one could be especially interesting because I heard garret talking about children learning at abnormal rates because of the exposure to more complex information. This idea wouldn't be a very refined resolution in book form but I think it could be a good step.

It seems today that kids books are presented in a very concrete and picturesque format. I feel the way kids learn language through systematic association could be carried over to their visual vocabulary as well.

I feel like visual to verbal communication and visa versa could start in a less backwards way

for instance......instead of matching the word-build___with the image-building __kids could maybe match the word  build    with imagery of the most basic associations of build such as modular building blocks that combine to make something much bigger. It could even be benificial to simplify the images to iconic or even abstract formats.

I just think that learning could be planned out to be more chronological in some areas and more time warpish in others.......

garret brought up an interesting subject....kids that learn multiple languages at early ages.

this is proof of the phenomena equivalent to babie geniuses.....I mean kids that are understand complex things at early ages because of early exposure to ideas beyond their initial capacities.

personal experience______my girlfriend can read one page in a harry potter book in 30 seconds. I can read the same harry potter page in no less that about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. My girlfriends read great expectations at the age of 9. I was playing power rangers or drawing or something. Her mother read to her every night since before she was a todler till about the age of 7. etc etc nurture etcnurturenurturenurture

well thats my outline for that idea

please reply so i can continue

wow sleep does well to developing ideas. My Haiku animation has many versions now, and though I feel it is rather refined it will be good to hear from the teachers.

I'm afraid of leaving my studio pals behind during thanksgiving, however I do feel like getting away from hustle and bustle will do our minds well. I just can't imagine what christmas will feel like. I'm gonna have to get my job back to fill the voids of graphic design undergrad program at kcai.

wont be long though, we will have a fun time

So I've learned a new lesson...Don't wait to work.
I just got mono and it was totally unpredictable. Now I stay up every other night trying to do work while I sleep for 12 hours on the other nights. This is not a good Idea. No particularly good Ideas have come of it. Maybe they have but its still the worst sleeping pattern of my life.

I'm going to work on it this weekend.

I have found a happy accident occurring when I order images in books. I organized my color book according to concept instead of form. I had no idea the outcome would seem so natural. Of course , all the photographs were of houses, and it just so happened to match up really well. I organized the color arrangements and theory studies accordingly to complexity of the idea as well as chronologically.
I didn't order them formally on purpose but they seemed to connect in extremely natural ways. Probably partially a real miracle but maybe could become a controlled process that could be utilized in the future.

I feel like the bit map would be the best choice for my shapes. I have alot of tonal changes in my mark combos that I definitely do not want to loose in vector shapes. It very well may be a useful thing to try a hybrid but that will take some experimentation.

when I went to my review on monday

when I went to my review on monday...
I just realized how much I am affected by fear of failure. When I saw Jamie and Michael sitting there it seemed as though I was talking to my parents after the first time I ever did something really outlandishly wrong. Like the first time I got caught drinking by my parents.
Well, thats not who they are. My problem is•••I need to see that like my parents, they are here to help (not to baby-set(or by me things for christmas( or teach me to tie my shoes). The same problem occurred last year with Jim Sajovic, the painter. He was an amazing teacher but seemed incredibly critical. No matter how hard I tried there was no pleasing him indefinitely. His words were much more helpful at the end of the year that the beginning (his words never changed).

I guess I'm saying that I know now that it may not be about pleasing them, but really about working through the project and finding as many solutions that make sense and get the message to viewers across the board.

Jamie and Michael have clarified to me that I haven't been one two overlook form, but sometimes translation is overlooked. This is a problem. If I can translate better what I need to say, I would be pleased and the teachers will be pleased.

Hope to come to a point soon where I feel comfortable talking in critique. It would be nice to make that situation a natural thing for me. To address form and concept for me is to much like saying two words at once.
––––––this is why I have decided to start writing more.

then I dont have to say two words at once because Its more of a time sequential activity than thinking is.

Osmium is supposed as the densest of all metals on the periodic table. It is hard to make, and becomes brittle. This is because it is a volatile substance, or a substance that fluctuates often and becomes unstable. It is both manufactured as a biproduct of nickel and copper and found in natural sources. Regardless of where it is found, it must usually be seperated or extracted from other elements bound to it. Osmium is used for its strength and resistance to wear in the types of fountain pens, electrical contacts, and needles on a phonograph. But the oddities of Osmium go further still as Osmium is a strong oxidant, and it cross-links lipids reacting with unsaturated carbon carbon bonds, which can fix biological membranes in place in tissue samples while staining them. This is why Osmium contains a high density of electrons. This makes it a prime candidate for transmission electron microscopy studies of biological materials. TEM is the creation of images through the transmission of electrons through a specimen and interacting with it. This image is then magnified, focused and recieved on some sort of screen of film.   Osmium is a blue gray color.

Osmium is also used for any number of surgical implants and pacemakers for its resistance to wear. Since we trust it for so many life cradling jobs, Osmium seems to have found a very unique occupation in human history, mostly for strength and high content of electrons. It makes me curious to think how one substance can be responsible for all these applications but it makes sense that unique characteristics would be put to use in order to create a logical efficient system of thinking.

Jamie, here are my iterations I like. Still one more on the way after I get out of class.

REBUILD RHETORIC

TO MICHAEL.
Do you think it would be easier for me to get my point across if I used one idea word RHETORIC and one word that is slightly less ambiguous like REBUILD in the place of retrospect so that I could use architectural diagrams along with different and seemingly neutral textural text elements like the alphabet in different typefaces? I think this word change would leave more room for more stable visual messages than the RETROSPECT plan. I think I could come up with alot more solid ideas on the interactions that take place between the letterform and background elements.

Saturday, September 27, 2008

I've actually just decided to elaborate on the interaction between the background elements and the letterform. If it works out in flash, the letterform will be a mask that cuts through the background to reveal a hidden layer that is the explanatory link between the words/images in the background and the two words I've picked for the sequences to be about. The very back layer will contain images or mixtures of text and image that effectively explain a huge idea in a single readable composition. This concept explains the way graphic design and other techniques of organizing information are and always have been used to get the most essential part of messages across to a vast audience.

RhetoRic RetRospect

DeaR Michael EppelheimeR, the link between these two woRds is faiRly obvious to me but I should explain my intentions in oRdeR foR you to find it as Rational as I do.

Ret-Ro-spect

AmeRican HeRitage dictionaRy_n. a Review, suRvey oR contemplation of things in the past

DictionaRy.com1. contemplation of the past;  a suRvey of past  time,

events,  etc.

    -veRb (used without object)

 Rhet-o-Ric

AmeRican HeRitage DictionaRy_a. The aRt oR study of using language  effectively and peRsuasively.

DictionaRy.com_2. the aRt oR science of all specialized liteRaRy uses of language in pRose oR veRse,  including the figuRes of speech.

I would like to link these two woRds togetheR in a fashion that discRibes...

1. ouR Reflection on the way we Rationalize thRough discouRse and the use of language

2. how ouR Reality has always been based on language and theRefoRe to fully undeRstand ouR Reality and  its limitations we have contemplated the histoRy of so many gReat thinkeRs

3. how, now that we undeRstand what ouR Reality is based off of, does it deceive us (is the Reality

language, discouRse and communication (veRbal, wRitten and visual) cReates moRe oR less Real than the Reality expeRience gives us).

I think it is since a human being cannot peRceive an entiRe situation-like the cRisis of ouR economy foR example- without the help of vaRious communication devices. Even if one could peRceive such a macRo delemma without the help of the media oR public domain info oR the inteRnet, theRe is no way foR that peRson to be able to do anything about it. Unless that peRson gains a position of poweR that allows theiR ideas to be communicated to the masses then they will go unheaRd.

I don’t know if I would be capable of coveRing all of these points in this pRoject but I have a few ideas on how the imageRy and letteRfoRm could hint at these ideas in a moRe subtle way. I’m thinking I will use text walls to cReate a spatial effect. The text I plan to use will pRobably be veRy impoRtant texts in the histoRy of language. FoR example, Religious texts, goveRnment tReaties oR documents, philosopheR wRitings fRom DaRwin/MaRx/BeauRegaRd etc., and cuRRent day wRitings oR examples of communication(in the manneR it is distRibuted today thRough inteRnet, magazines, television, satellite Radio, infoRmation gRaphs, etc.). All these things would foRm a backgRound element that would line up inteRactively with the letteRfoRm the cReate new meaning foR both the foRegRound and backgRound.

The letteR foRm would pRobably be made up of a baseline element like diffeRent alphabets and numbeR systems. It may even RepResent a child oR neutRal chaRacteR that the vieweR could Relate to.

But befoRe I wRite anymoRe please wRite back whetheR I can keep going oR not. Please keep in mind the fact that the images/sequences I will pRoduce will be a Reasonable simplified RepResentation

These R's are getting easier to render, but I'm just really anticipating the next big team up between type and vis-com.

Jamie. Just thought I'd show you this project my foundation group did in Jim Sajovic's class. It reminds me of what we are doing now but with some different restrictions and subject matter.
_we painted (with india ink) about 30 6"x6" compositions.
_about every five comps were a group that sequentially transformed from one image to another....like animation cells.
_then we used those comps to create a big comp (30"x30"). We could crop and rotate the originals in photoshop and then print them out for pasting.
_in crit we tried to analyze each comp in the room using lots of adjectives to objectively describe the images.

just thought I'd tell you, don't know why. I guess that seeing the consistencies in projects like this only go to show me that it is a universal tool in vis com.
Even though the book was a really big project/burden that turned out pretty well I Don't feel to attached to it. I do feel pretty attached to the ideas that were brought to my attention from it. I feel the compositions were strong and craft was fare, but no element exceeded my expectations as much as my new found (re-found) ability to develop and carry out big plans/ideas. So in a sentance-personal growth was the most valued thing I feel I've taken away with me from this assignment.

The biggest flaw in my working system is how I seem to consistently be unorganized and forget to write things down.
A city exists in the jobs it provides.
